Rodent
Norway Rat
Rattus norvegicus
Norway rats (also called brown or sewer rats) are the heavy-bodied rodents responsible for most ground-level rat problems across Kempton Park, Isando and Spartan. They burrow under paving, slabs and warehouse foundations, then travel inside via service voids. Effective control requires tamper-proof bait stations, exterior perimeter treatment and entry-point sealing.
How to identify
- Adults 200–250 mm body length, blunt nose, small ears
- Tail shorter than body, coarse brown-grey fur
- Droppings 18–20 mm, capsule-shaped with blunt ends
- Burrows 60–90 mm wide near walls, fences and bins
Where they hide
- Burrows under paving, decks and outbuildings
- Sewers, stormwater drains and manholes
- Warehouse pallet stacks and loading-bay perimeters
- Compost heaps and overgrown back gardens
