Mosquito

Culex / Aedes spp.

Mosquitoes thrive in Highveld summers and breed in any pocket of standing water — rain-water tanks, pot saucers, blocked gutters, swimming-pool covers and birdbaths. Beyond the irritation of bites, Culex and Aedes species transmit West Nile virus, dengue and chikungunya. Effective control combines breeding-source elimination, larvicide of permanent water and a perimeter residual treatment.

How to identify

  • 3–6 mm slender body, single pair of wings, long proboscis
  • Female bites; male feeds only on plant nectar
  • Larvae ('wrigglers') visible in any standing water
  • Active dawn and dusk, attracted to CO2 and warmth

Where they hide

  • Pot saucers, birdbaths and pet-water bowls
  • Blocked gutters and downpipes
  • Pool covers, fishponds and rain-water tanks
  • Tree holes, wheelbarrows and tyre piles

Health & property risks

  • Transmits West Nile, dengue, chikungunya
  • Severe allergic reactions in some individuals
  • Disrupts outdoor entertaining and patio use
  • Risk to outdoor venues, restaurants and lodges

Prevention tips

  • Tip out any standing water weekly
  • Larvicide rain-water tanks and ornamental ponds
  • Fit fine-mesh screens to bedroom windows
  • Schedule perimeter mister treatment in summer
